Frank Brame Honored at San Juan Aviation Museum

Frank and Sandra Brame

Long time San Juan Pilots member, and former President, Frank Brame, was honored as 2012's Featured Pilot, at the San Juan Aviation Museum at Friday Harbor Airport.

The dedication ceremony, held Sunday, May 20 was a standing-room-only crowd of friends and fans.

The ceremony included Frank's old friends and family, who related several previously untold stories of his earlier days of flying and aircraft design.  A more detailed story is forthcoming, but we thought you'd like to see the photos first.

See the slide show of photos provided by Bob Tauscher on the tab above.

Friday Harbor Airport Construction Update

I wanted to update you on the schedule for the sewer line that will be going through airport property and across the north end of taxiway Bravo.

At the pre-construction meeting I was advised that construction will begin at the hospital site on May 14th and cross Franklin Drive, then move up the hill behind Island Air along the grass. They will be installing pipe and manholes along this route.

Beginning next week (May 21-23) they will cut the taxiway just south of Ernie’s café which will require tenants in the northern portion of the airport to use the transient parking entrance to the runway. (I will be happy to assign any tenant a spot south of the construction area if you would prefer.) This portion of the construction is scheduled for 3 days and the taxiway should be back open late on the 23rd.

From the 24th -28th, construction will continue along the North side of Aeronautical Services and cross Vehicle Gate 4 which will mean those folks who use this entrance will have to use another route. Hopefully, all will be complete by the end of the month or early in June. Please pass along this message to  your airport friends. Thank you so much for your patience and as always, if you have any questions, please give me a call.

Regards,

Dave

Friday Harbor Airport Construction Notice

I wanted to send you a notice of construction regarding the Peace Health Hospital sanitary sewer line construction slated for the week of May 21th, 2012. The hospital will be excavating a new sewer line that will run from their site, across Franklin Drive, along the fence behind Island Air and then eastward towards Ernie’s café, finally crossing Taxiway “Bravo” and terminating at the manhole just across from Ernie’s café.

What this means for Island Air, Aeronautical Services and Ernie’s is that there will be construction equipment and trenching crossing the entrances and in the vicinity of their businesses. Several large manholes will have to be placed on airport property adjacent to these businesses or entrances.

What this means for pilots (especially on the North side of the airfield) is that their normal access to Runway 16 will be blocked on Taxiway Bravo near Ernie’s. The fuel island will remain open. Hangars A,B, Westwind, San Juan Air Maintenance, M, J,K, and L will have to be routed through transient parking on the Northeast corner of the airfield and access Runway 16 from the east side.

The construction on the taxiway is scheduled to last 2-3 days. A NOTAM will be issued, barricades placed and there will be a flagger to direct transient traffic. If this is a hardship or you would prefer to keep your aircraft south of the barricades, please get with me and I will make sure you have parking on the ramp outside the construction area free of charge. As soon as I have a firm date I will let you know. I appreciate your understanding and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Regards, Dave

Copalis Beach State Airport runway to close March 13 for maintenance

COPALIS – The runway at Copalis Beach State Airport is scheduled to be closed for maintenance 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, March 13. The Washington State Department of Transportation, which manages the airport, will install new navigation and safety equipment and improved airport information signs. The maintenance work and runway closure could extend through March 14. Pilots are encouraged to check notices to airmen for more information. The work includes moving the northern runway marker about 740 feet south. Crews will also replace a missing runway end marker near the Copalis River and install a new windcone on the airport. Copalis is one of 17 airports operated by WSDOT and the only known beach airport in Washington state.
